Bonjour! We are so very thrilled to reveal the details of Paper Crown's 2016 Glitter Retreat, A Paris Flea Market. Like our theme, we hope that this year's retreat will be collection of treasures both large and small that will bring to mind the most charming memories of your time at Paper Crown.
Thursday, April 28th
On Thursday evening we will meet at 6:30 pm for a welcome party. Over a glass of French wine and hor d'oeuvres, you will get an opportunity to meet your fellow artists and get a jump start on creating. At this party we will have a collaborative art project which will go home with one lucky artist. On Thursday evening we will also have our first of three swaps. I know we will not want to leave but since we have a full day of creating on Friday, it's off to bed for a good night's sleep and sweet dreams. All of Thursday evening's activities are included in the Glitter Retreat cost.
Friday, April 29th
We will begin the day by meeting at Paper Crown at 8:30 am. After breakfast, we will start our first class around 9 am. Each of the four classes offered at the Glitter Retreat will be approximately 3 hours. Some might take a tad longer and others a bit shorter, but three hours will be our general guideline. At noon we will break for lunch and then take a little field trip for some creative inspiration and a little shopping.
We will then return to Paper Crown mid afternoon and begin our second class. At the conclusion of class, we will head up to the Paper Attic for a catered dinner. Following dinner we will have our second swap. All of Friday's activities, except for any purchases made while shopping, are included in the Glitter Retreat cost.
Saturday, April 30th
At 9:30 am we will meet at Paper Crown for a quick breakfast, latte and begin the first class around 10:00 am. After a morning of creating, we will break for a delicious catered lunch around 1:00 pm in the Paper Attic. Our third swap will take place after lunch. The final class will begin around 2:30 pm and we should be done around 5:30 pm. All of Saturday's activities are included in the Glitter Retreat cost.
* this is a proposed timetable and may change a bit; we are still in the planning stages.
I am thrilled to announce that my persistence paid off and in January, Catherine made us the happiest girls around when she agreed to be part of our Glitter Retreat team.
You all have created with her stamps for years and now you get to learn from Catherine using her newest stamp collection, Paris Flea. We have wished for this opportunity for years and are beyond thrilled for the opportunity to take from an artist we all admire.
Catherine has brought several of her stamps to life in her Santos project; it is enchanting and you will love it. Visit Catherine at http://www.characterconstructions.com/.
Medeah Kitsmiller is our resident mixed media guru. You can tell Medeah used to be an elementary school art teacher because her classes are just so much fun. Medeah's projects are all about the process and you never leave a class without learning a new technique- or good conversation. The ideas are always swirling in Medeah's head but I am so glad she decided on the gorgeous crown for her Glitter Retreat project. It is one of my favorite Medeah projects and we all thought it was fitting attendees would have a reminder of their weekend at Paper Crown. Visit Medeah at http://medeah.blogspot.com/.
I love when I get teaching recommendations from Paper Crown customers because they are always right on the mark. Angie Myers came to us via Becky Bullard and she is a perfect fit. Angie began teaching at Paper Crown last winter and she has quickly become a store and retreat favorite. Angie also has taught elementary art in the past and it is evident in her teaching style. You will always learn something new and leave with smile. Angie's mixed media box is a beautiful collection of techniques and treasures much like finds from a wonderful day exploring the French brocantes.
Where do I begin to describe Miss Jackie Peters? She has taught at Paper Crown since the beginning and her touch is on everything at the store. I am so very glad she entered the crown contest almost 10 years ago because it changed the course of the store. You will never be disappointed in a "Jackie" class! You will swoon when you see Jackie's take on a deconstructed French journal; it looks like an authentic treasured "find" from the Saint-Ouen Flea Market. Visit Jackie at http://goodgriefgirdie.typepad.com/blog/.
Photos of all four projects are coming very soon- as you all know, sometimes the creative process takes all kinds of twists and turns but we like to think of it as adding to the depth of beauty.
What art retreat would be complete without a swap or two? We will have one swap each day. The three swaps are " Mademoiselle" a homage to Catherine's paper dolls stamps, "No One Can Fill Your Shoes" grab your favorite vintage slipper (or create your own) and fill it with small items you might search for at a French brocante, and "Baubles and Beads" a bracelet swap.
For the "Mademoiselle" swap simply pick your favorite Character Construction stamp and create your favorite paper doll. Let your imagination run wild, we just ask that you use one of Catherine's stamps. How fun it will be to have her dolls on parade!
For the "No One Can Fill Your Shoes" (or in our case your French slipper) either find a fun, cheap vintage dress shoe/slipper or make your own from our slipper pattern and then fill it with flea market finds.
Our final swap, "Baubles and Beads" is a bracelet swap. You can either buy, create or embellish an existing bracelet, the choice is yours.
The swaps are optional and you can do all, two, one or none. Please just choose what you are comfortable doing. I will tell you that the ladies in the past who did not participated were disappointed they had not joined in the fun.
If you are interested in heading up a swap please let me know.
We are hoping our retreat will not only draw from the OKC area but also some of you who have been following us through our blogs and facebook. We have a variety of hotels close to the store and would be happy to give you recommendations. If you are coming from out of town please call the store, we want to make sure and give you a special Oklahoma welcome and will help to accommodate you in any way possible.
We will have two possibly three of our meals in the Paper Attic at the store. It is a fun, creative space but is only assessable by stairs.
This will be our fourth Paper Crown Glitter Retreat. To get an overview of what you might expect this magical weekend visit
