Summer Fun- First Mondays

I think I can speak for everyone- this weather pattern needs to head on out- actually it just needs to dissipate into thin air. I know we are all so very tired of warnings, watches and threats. Hopefully next week's weather will be much, much better and either way we are going to start the week and the month off right with "First Monday."

The first Mondays of June, July and August will be Paper Crown's " First Monday. " Join us on the first Monday of the summer months from 11-2 for some fun and free crafting. It is similar to what we have done summer's past; however this summer, it is over the lunch hour and not at night.  This is a come and go time to learn a new technique and make a little something. Brown bags are welcome and in addition, from 11-2 you will get 15% off your total purchase.

Hope you can join us this Monday June, 3 from 11-2 to kick off the summer and " First Monday"

Also don't forget Hope for Oklahoma auction runs through Friday !

Thanks Heather for an amazing job. It's amazing the success so far and it is will just explode on Friday.

Altered Book Postponed One Week

I hate to do this and who would have thought I would be postponing Altered Book in May but...
Due to the threat of tornadoes and large hail (will this ever end!), we will not be having our altered book swap tonight but will reschedule for next Wed., June 5th. Several of our members travel quite a ways from the OKC area and our members are also scattered throughout the Oklahoma City area. I'm sure since I have done this it will be a beautiful night but we all need a break from that little map in the corner of our TV.

If you would like to do a book this week I think I have some at the store so call to see which ones are available. Theme for next month is cream, silver & pearl. You can also do A page of your choice if you are doubling up.

I apologize for messing up every one's plans but decided our group needed to be known for our artful journals not dinged up cars!

If you haven't done so yet check out www.facebook.com/hopeforok. It is an online auction benefiting the victims of OK tornadoes. It is hosting by Heather Ales a TX teacher at Paper Crown and features art from several of our altered book members.

Stay safe and see you next Wed.

Our Sincere Thank You

This past week we have once again been reminded of what a great country we live in. Our sincerest thank you to all those who have served our country so very unselfishly. We honor and thank you today.

Just a reminder that tonight at 7pm the bidding opens for the Hope for Oklahoma auction. Thank you to Heather Ales for spearheading this event. It will help those in our community who have lost so very much. I hope you all will take a look at the wonderful items that have been so generously donated.  Remember bid high, it is for our neighbors, family and friends.

Paper Crown will be closed today in honor of Memorial Day and tomorrow when I pick up Katie from her mission trip.

Cheri Update

Our favorite singing clerk popped in to Paper Crown this morning to check in and get a hug. I saw with my own two eyes, Cheri and baby Grant are fine. Cheri moved into her rental house this morning. About 60 volunteers showed up at the farm this morning at 7 to help load up what they could and move it to the rental. Cheri is close to the store and her parents which will be nice once Grant arrives. Cheri went to the doctor this week and all was well. If she has not had Grant by Father's Day, she will be induced. I can't think of a better present for Alan or Mr. Redburn!

Here are some pictures of the farm...

As you can see there isn't much left. Cheri said for the most part their bedroom,  kitchen and Grant's room are fairly intact. The rest of the house is a loss, including Cheri's scrapbook room which had all of her baby equipment. They also lost their cars which were in the garage. Alan had driven Cheri to school on Monday because they were supposed to have a Dr. apt after school.

They are currently still deciding whether they will relocate or rebuild.

Cheri said she and Alan were both overwhelmed  by the generosity of friends and total strangers. Cheri has an angel in NY who has sent her several large boxes of diapers and wipes. Because Cheri and Alan are in temporary housing and because they are still not sure what will be salvageable, gift cards to places such as Walmart and Target are the best choice. Paper Crown will continue to collect for Cheri, Alan and baby Grant through next weekend. Thank you to all who have been so generous, Cheri was brought to tears this morning.

Another way to help tornado victims is through Heather Ale's Hope for Oklahoma art auction on Facebook. Artists from around the country, many are familiar Paper Crown and Glitter Market girls, have donated pieces and 100% of the proceeds will benefit tornado victims. The auction is on Facebook and begins Monday, May 27th- Friday, May 31st. You won't want to miss this great opportunity to help our neighbors.

Hope for Oklahoma

Thank you to everyone who has called or written to check on Miss Cheri. That caring attitude makes us all proud to be Okies. However we can't take all the credit because one of our friends to the south has come up with a great idea to help those in Oklahoma. Our good friend, Paper Crown instructor, Glitter Market vendor and just all around great gal, Heather Ales, has a Facebook page, Hope for Oklahoma. http://www.facebook.com/n/?hopeforok&mid=806&n_m=cindy%40papercrown.net

Heather is gathering artists who will be donating their work for an on line auction. The proceeds from this auction will go towards our neighbors who are starting over following this week's tornadoes. If you would like to contribute please contact Heather and be sure to check out the Hope for Oklahoma auction. This is such a great idea and I appreciate Heather spearheading this project. What a great opportunity for everyone to participate, maybe be the highest bidder on a great piece of art and assist those that so need our help.

We will continue to collect gift cards and cash for Cheri at the store. If you would like to leave Cheri a note of encouragement we will deliver those to her also. For years Cheri has made us all smile and chuckle, now is the time to return the favor and lift her spirits.

For some reason I am unable to loads pics so imagine a cute pic of Miss Cheri smiling of course, the oh so talented Heather Ales and a beautifully simple watercolor for Hope for Oklahoma.- Computers urgh! but at least I have one- count your blessings

For Cheri, Alan and baby Grant

I thought we had "dodged a bullet" yesterday. The store was fine, my house and kiddos fine, I had checked on everyone I thought that lived in the area and they were fine. I was trying to decide what the store and our community could do to help. I had spent some time this morning responding to our Paper Crown friends from out of state who were checking on us. A little after noon I had actually just texted the words "We are all fine" to a sales rep who was checking on us when the call came.  We were not fine.

It was Cheri. I mistakenly thought baby Grant had come a few weeks early. With a quiver in her voice Cheri told me her farm house had been in the line of the tornado yesterday. Cheri was a school in Midwest city when it hit and is fine. Alan rode out the storm in their basement. Cheri, Alan and Grant are all fine; however, the house and farm not. They are currently staying close to the store with relatives and trying to find temporary housing. Cheri said she wasn't sure if they would stay and rebuild or move. She is just grateful Grant didn't come early and Alan was safe.

The cute nursery that was complete and waiting for Grant's arrival is destroyed. All the new baby equipment awaiting their first  child is gone. I am not sure what they have been able to recover but I don't think it is much.

I now know how Paper Crown can help. We will be collecting gift cards at the store for the Price's. Until they are able to assess what was lost and what can be recovered, I think this is the safest thing. I will be in touch with Cheri the next few days and am planning some sort of crafting benefit for their family. At the moment we are all in somewhat of a state of shock. Please keep Cheri and all those whose lives changed yesterday in your prayers.

For those of you that don't know, Cheri worked at Paper Crown for over 8 years. Cheri was actually here long before I bought the store. Cheri teaches 1st grade and worked on Saturdays and during the summer. If you ever came on Saturday, you more than likely have heard Cheri sing or laugh. She has a beautiful voice and a deep happy laugh- I miss them both. A little over a year ago Cheri got married and about a year ago she quit working at Paper Crown to hang out with Alan. At Glitter Market last fall Cheri told me she was expecting their first child. I miss her but understand her choice. Cheri always helps at Glitter Market and I saw her just a couple of weeks ago. She is part of our Paper Crown family.

Please keep Cheri and all those many families in your prayers. It is once again a devastating time for our city and state but as we have seen in the past, we are strong.

Summer Classes

Here is a rundown of the summer classes we have so far. I suspect we will have more and a couple of special treats in August- think b-day and bonjour! We are blessed to have the best classes in town and our talented teachers are right here in our area. Fortunately we don't have to drive or fly to get some of the best classes in the country. Weekly I get emails and calls from those out of town wishing they lived here and wanting a retreat type setting where they could take several classes from our Paper Crown teachers/ artists. We are definitely mulling that idea over but in the mean time, I encourage those of you in town to take advantage of our local treasure.

Don't forget Mom-

One shop Mother's Day shopping.

Store will close today, Friday May 10th at 4.

P.S. Payne did get the service award Wed. pm- over 250 hours of volunteer service. Headed to Tulsa tonight for the State Soccer championship. I'm wearing my mom's wedding ring today so she can be close. Payne was born a couple of months after mom passed away- hence the name Payne. Thought that sounded better than Linda Lou! Although Payne's dad and I didn't know his sex we had someone tell mom, We have always teased Payne that he has a special connection with her. Go Chargers -game on foxsportssouhwest.com.   I realize I have become an obnoxious sport's mom- oh dear! Em is starting HS football in the fall!

Headed to T Town

I happily announce the Paper Crown will close a little early this Friday, May 10th. The store will be closing an hour early at 4:00 pm because the Heritage Hall Chargers are playing that evening at University of Tulsa for the 5A State Championship in soccer- and I happen to know the team captain.

From here on out this post will have nothing to do with Paper Crown so if you aren't interested in a rambling mom's comments- and I don't blame you-  I suggest you click off and tune in tomorrow.

My middle son Payne who is a senior has played soccer since his sophomore year. He was a pretty good little soccer player in elementary school but gave it up his 7th grade year to try football. He gave it a great shot but isn't built for that sport and decided to try soccer again. Those middle school years are when the club teams really step it up and Payne went in at a disadvantage. He kept at it on some average teams and even played on a rec team to try and improve his skills.

This year Payne is the only senior on a team full of incredibly talented underclassmen- many freshmen & sophomores. Payne will readily admit he is not in the top tier of players. He started every game and ran what seems like a marathon but he is not a star. I asked him if that bugged him and he said not at all- and he meant it. What Payne may lack in athletic ability he has in his leadership skills. I have watched him cool hot tempers, encourage fellow teammates like a parent and lead by example. He isn't the star but he sure is his momma's star. Here's to a perfect 17-0 season Bud, no one deserves a state ring more than you!

While I'm on my momma bear roll, tonight is his awards assembly at school. I was notified he would be getting an award; he claims all seniors get the letter because each member of the class is recognized. Last year Payne got the top service award. I can't remember what it is exactly but possibly the President's gold service award for over 200 and something hours of community service. For the past three summers Payne has volunteered at a camp in hot San Antonio as a junior counselor. Not only does he not get paid but he isn't playing in the pool with the campers but taking out trash, watering plants and serving meals- what I call grunt work.

Last year at the awards assembly when they were introducing Payne's award as a student who had complete 250+ hours of community service, a family member who didn't realize Payne would be the recipient made a comment to the effect here is a "nerd award." He felt terrible afterwards but I realized that is often how society views service to others. Often doing what is right is not glamorous, fun and certainly won't get you in the limelight but it is simply what is right. In a time when fewer and fewer people seem to do what is right, I am so very proud when Payne has chosen the road less traveled.

While you may not get the superstar athlete award tonight, you probably will get one that means so much more to your mom- the good young man award . Keep up the good work bud- your mom is proud of you!

Ok back to artsy stuff

Couture

Thought I would share some pictures of Colette's class at the store last Thursday. The class was titled " Project Runway" and Colette guided them in finishing either three smaller dresses or one larger one. Everyone had fun going through Colette's Stash of French linens, lace and bobbles to make their dress their own.

What a fun and relaxing class.

The hourly drawing winners at Glitter Market are: Fran McClintock, Samantha Carlton, Donna Duhon, Paige Black & Teresa Keel. Ladies come by the store to pick up your prize.
